Flat roofs

How come roofs are slanted in the country and flat in the cities?
If a slanted roof is the cheapest way of dealing with snow and rain, why don't they use it in the city too? It's not like the roof is usually used for anything much, except for meetings and fights between superheroes, and they really should have their own headquarters.

The only good roof is a green roof!

You are seeing things. I live in the city and the roof of this house is heavily slanted.

Most large city buildings (highrises) have a flat roof to accommodate utilities such as satellite dishes, microwave pods, large antennas (antennae) and other equipment needed for business.

Superheros pay into a fund monthly to allow them limited use of the free area on such large buildings.

Peaked roofs are a problem in hurricane country, they tend to be blown off by the winds. If you look around the older sections of Miami you see mostly flat roofs.

TTL hasn't seen a real city. How many slanted roofs are there in New York City? They are flat, tarred roofs because you don't want snow sliding off at that height. Even a brownstone has a flat roof. In the suburbs, most houses have a peaked roof.

In addition to the aforementioned, I'm guessing a big reason is that no one would want snow and ice sliding off of gigantic slanted rooves and onto the sidewalk - or pedestrians.

"Hey, I just got hit by a piece of ice flying off your roof! You're gonna hear from my lawyer!!"

Houses emit a lot of heat and the bigger the house the more heat is wasted (actually less per living volume but more per square of the roof). So on the big houses the snow will always melt. It is then much cheaper to collect water from the flat roof and forward it to drain in the middle than build slanted roof with eaves. And utility purpose of the flat surface is of value of course too.

Sliding snow, yes. When I lived in Edinburgh, I ate at a cafe which is just on the very sharp corner when one comes into the city from the SouthWest (coming off Queensferry St.) One day I was not there, in a storm, a tile was blown off the roof and fucking killed a waitress! (What she was doing outside in weather like that I don't know, maybe she was on her way to work.)

I don't want to take supervillains into my personal headquartes. At least not on the first fight.

When we get better acquainted, maybe become dedicated arch-enemies, THEN we'll see. Meanwhile, I'll stick to rooftop-bumping.

Speaking of which, you wouldn't believe what I spotted Nightwing and Starfire doing the other night. SOME snow doesn't melt on it's own!

TTL lives in my Danger Room training program? Dang! And there I thought he was neighbours with the Librarian!

He must've taken a wrong U-turn in L-space the day Major Man got farted on by Dark Captain Underpants during the 1945 Chili Con Carne Tijuana Summer Festival. Lots of people were displaced that day...

The U.S. govt covered it up by claiming they had tested their first nuke nearby. As if one measly kiloton could shatter the fabric of Space and Time...
