Pogue-O-Matic

The Pogue-O-Matic is an interactive shopping virtual assistant. As you might expect from David Pogue, it's at least as fun if you don't do anything at all.

Here's a strange thing: after I select a feature of the product type I'm looking at, my computer remembers my choice... even if I go to another browser! How the hell is that done?

"my computer remembers my choice"

I don't know Macs, but on a PC, the active memory (RAM) works along with a Page File of recently-accessed items, so that returning to those is both faster and easier than starting from scratch. The page file is usually a percentage or proportionate to the size of the RAM or Random Access Memory, and is adjustable if necessary.
