Teen abstinence study

Teen abstinence study.
Another article.
"The pledging group was also less likely to use condoms during their first sexual experience or get tested for STDs, the study found."

The US militant, sorry, religious right's programs to promote sexual abstinence to teens and deliberately not teach them ways to prevent pregnancy and STDs if they (oh, the shock) turn out to want sex anyway, is deeply braindead. Such a "plan" does not come from a place of compassion, but a place of deep and ingrown emotional constipation. It is coming from the kind of person whose solution to insubordinate children is to beat them severely. He has never seen this work, but it's the only tool he has, and by gawd he's gonna use it til it breaks.

[By the way, I heard of the study on the TV show Studio 60, which is excellent. Written by Aaron "West Wing" Sorkin.]

On an episode of Boston Legal a girl sued her school board because their abstinence-only campaign caused her to contract HIV. She didn't know anything about how to prevent it. Of course in real life it's unlikely she would win.

Maybe like The World Inside instruction in technique should be given? Imagine the pressure to perform for the final exam! ;-)

Well spoken. As much as I believe in, and try hard to abide to the "live and let live" philosophy, I cannot help myself but to become very angry whenever I am reminded of the existence of such jerks.

It is already hard enough to see how they manage to systematically turn their kids into patented neurotics, but their insistance on forcing everyone to abide by their rule really challenges my tolerance.

Exactly that. One of my last bastions too, though I will get it eventually I'm sure.

Is it lonely up there on your pedestal?

You know, sometimes when you're fighting temptation, it is more pleasant to LOSE.
Perhaps your tolerance doesn't need to be invincible and remain undefeated...

Tolerating intolerance feels like "making war for peace", as soon as you start you have already failed.
Or, to borrow a slogan from a pacifist demonstration, it's like "fucking for virginity". ;-)

One can work to change things. The trick is to learn to not hate, and not condemn.

It may be a lost cause but I'll be damned if I'm giving up!
