Marilyn Monroe - The Diamond Collection

Marilyn Monroe - The Diamond Collection
Sadly Amazon US does not have a similar offer, but I wanted to alert my European readers to Amazon UK selling this collection for sixteen pounds. That's eleven DVDs for the price of one or two! A good offer in anybody's book. (I don't think anybody is making any money on this one. Must be a loss leader of some sort?)

Admittedly the collection does not include my favorite Marilyn film Some Like It Hot, but it does include another fine comedy (and an overlooked one), Monkey Business, and it has many of her films I have never seen, or not for decades.

Update:
OK, not really a "downside" as much as an irriation point, but: the physical DVD package includes some of the dumbest design decisions I've seen. Each DVD has a different face shot of Marilyn instead of a picture from the movie on it. OK, I could live with that. But then the only hint of which movie is actually on the disc is in the tiny, tiny text along the edge of the disk. I have to have really good light to even read it. And it gets worse: there are two packages because of there being eleven discs. And each package has a large, clear list of films. But get this: the list is for the other package. Geez Louize!

Mines just arrived! I'm still suspicious - surely there must be something wrong with the prints - I haven't had time to watch any yet but the package itself is lovely, and all the films are present and correct. Glad I waited & didn't buy them as individuals now. Lets hope the film quality is a good as the package...:-)

I doubt it. The collection has excellent reviews on Amazon.

Maybe it's just a "fire sale" offer, to attract customers to the store in general.

Any chance they might have a newer and better version of the box waiting to be released?

By the way, Amazon now says:

"The price has decreased from £16.00 to £15.97 since you placed it in your Shopping Basket."

This is like playing the stocks game. :-) Should I wait still, or buy?

I don't see how that would be worth a 70% price reduction.

Amazon.co.uk will deliver some items to the US. I think the only trouble I've had was trying to get a region free DVD player.

There are sometimes export and purchase limits.

Make sure if you do buy DVD's from Amazon.co.uk you can get a region 0 or region 1 version for the US (or you have a hacked player)

Hey alex, my brother purchased one for me off of Ebay. It plays both region 1 and 2.
Also I highly recommend Amazon UK. They rock. They recently released Rich Man Poor Man Book II on DVD and I love it!
Amazon is a valuble and respected company in my view :) Both American and UK!

I too have discovered that for best service one has to use both Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk.

Amazon.co.uk is really fast here in Europe, and a good source for PAL format DVDs. My only gripe with them is that more than once the items have arrived mangled. In fact, I've noted a wider trend: Packages originating from the U.K. have a high likelihood of being poorly packed and becoming mangled in transit.

In contrast, during my 10 years with Amazon.com I have never had anything to complain about. Their service has been stellar. Also, these days many items can be purchased cheapest there. Delivery to Europe takes slightly longer but I don't mind waiting.

You must have been unlucky. I never have problems with Amazon UK, and I buy tons and tons and tons from them. (I shouldn't wonder if my collected buyings by now actually exceed a ton.)

I still also use Amazon US when they have something UK don't have yet.

Heh. You should inspect the structure of your building to make sure it can withstand the weight you are putting on it. :-)

Books are always OK. Bigger items are more problematic. For example the tin container on "The James Bond Collection (20 Disc Box Set)" had a huge dent on it. But sometimes even single DVD cases are broken. If I bother to complain they always send me a replacement, though.

No such issues with Amazon.com ever.

I have a hacked DVD player, got it a year back.

Strange thing is I've bought American stuff which was only available region 2 from .co.uk. Michael Mann's "LA Takedown" and Clooney's "Fail Safe" were only UK edn until recently.

Well, not long ago, I found a 2-disc edition of Spider-Man 2 at half price, only $10 (tax included). In the same store, they had the all-new "Spider-Man 2.1" version, with offered a teeny-weeny bit more extras, maybe 7 minutes of unseen footage and nothing else.
So I got a 50% reduction off the 2.1 price tag.

"(I shouldn't wonder if my collected buyings by now actually exceed a ton.)"

You mean, literally? ;-)

With that amount of buyage, he may even have eliminated some of it, litterally.

Yes, literally.
(Though I did not use the word.)
