Tim Powers

A fun interview with one of my favorite authors, Tim Powers.

I met Tim nigh twenty years ago at the Writers Of The Future workshop which he taught. I finally found a way to reach him, and got a mail back today, and he remembers not only me but the story which had helped me get to the workshop. I'm very flattered.

That story works well.

Thank you.
It was fun being at the event and workshop, because people could read the story in two minutes standing up, and almost everybody reacted with delight and laughter.

Veteran editor Algis Budrys says that it is the only story he ever bought which arrived in a letter-sized envelope. Fame! :)

How was the selling/buying of the story organised?

Anyway, you should try your hand at a longer sci-fi piece. Unless you haven't already.

I have tried to write long, but what I like is sort of abstract, and it is really hard to make work in long form.

If you win the contest, you get a prize. Then you get offered to sell the story for the associated anthology. You don't have to do it, but I don't see why not, they pay well, and it's prestigious.

The workshop and the whole thing was fantastic.
